With Christmas (literally) just around the corner, we’re well and truly in the holiday spirit. The tree’s up, presents are piling, and the whole flat smells of pine, cinnamon and berries. Bliss. Oh, and Mariah Carey’s been on repeat for a good few weeks now.
But, if you’re not yet feeling festive – don’t worry. Make a few changes and you’ll soon be reaching for the mulled wine spices, cranking up the heat and digging out the Hallmark box sets. Because, let’s be honest, who needs a Christmas party when you could have one in your own front room.
So, when it comes to the perfect Christmas night it, it doesn’t take much to turn things around and get in marvellously merry. Don’t believe me? Take a look…
Yankee Candle – Christmas Memories
For me, Christmas always starts with a scent, and this one from Yankee is to die for. No, I mean it, it literally is Christmas. In a jar. What could be better? You know, I’ve been holding onto it since last year and had to stop myself lighting it in July, it’s that good.
As with most Yankee fragrances, the smell also comes in melt and diffuser form, so it’s suitable for any room or space. It’s also not too sweet or sickly – which I really don’t like at all – so it’s not going to put you off your food or have you heaving when you wake up hungover on Boxing Day morning.
Price points vary, but they’re usually around the £15 mark – which for 110-150 hours of burn time is undeniably cheap. Which makes it all the more impressive!
Mariah Carey – Merry Christmas
Mariah Carey. Christmas. I’m sure they’re both defined the same, right? Mariah is Christmas, and I celebrated 1 December by taking out the holiday records – Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas II You – and spinning them on repeat.
OK, I guess it doesn’t have to be Mariah, but if you’re not playing Christmas music exclusively from 15 December or thereabouts you’re never going to be fully in the festive mood. Check out this Spotify playlist to kickstart your festive cheer.
Trash is the new class, and don’t you just love a dreadful Christmas jumper? The tackier the better, right? Actually, there are so many fab options available this year, but I do love the Looney Tunes one I picked up in the sale last year and held onto since January.
I have to say, one of my favourite things about the season is the fact its totally acceptable to not leave the house for two weeks, and during that time I’m wrapped up in track pants and a festive jumper – usually with a bit of tinsel draped over me – with a Santa hat and the dog on my lap.
Wine in hand optional. (Not really, its a must).
If you’re reading this now as we get well into December then, as far as I’m concerned, you’re a Grinch to begin with. But that doesn’t mean a bit of green won’t help get you ready for the holidays. It’s one of my favourite festive flicks and one I always watch early in the month to really get me excited.
Have to say, I love a Christmas movie, and we try to go through as many as we can – which usually drags on until 31 December because we remember all the old TV specials, forgotten classics and new additions that we missed.

Almost as important, however, is the Home Alone Christmas Eve marathon. Every year. It goes great with a bottle of champagne and as much food as you can stuff down to send you straight to sleep.
Part of the fun od the festive season is seeing how many boxes of mince pies you get through. I managed four before December even began, and I’m firmly on the elasticated waist pants until at least February. But who cares – its Christmas!
From about 20 December, there aren’t many surfaces in our flat that aren’t covered in bowls of chocolate, nuts, mince pies, and other festive nibbles to gorge on as we stroll from the sofa to the fridge and back again to top up our glasses.
And yes – I’ve been stocking up on nibbles since mid-October.
… and a large Baileys
Finally, what’s any December’s evening if it’s not rounded off with a glass of Baileys. Just the thought of it gets me excited. It’s the taste of Christmas, and the perfect indulgence to really make you merry and have you feeling festive in no time at all.
Overdone it with the classic all year? I’m obsessed with the new flavours on offer right now – coffee, orange truffle, salted caramel, almond… God, someone just pour me a glass now!
And there you have it – its officially Christmas!
