My teeth whitening experience #1

[This is not a sponsored post. The teeth whitening treatment at The London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry was a gifted experience.]

The way you feel about your smile has such an impact on your confidence and overall personality. If you’re happy with your teeth, you’ll be totally uninhibited, but as soon as insecurity creeps in it definitely shows. From smiling with pursed lips to relying on a pout, feeling that self conscious can be exhausting – but it doesn’t need to be.

I used to have major hangups about my teeth, not least of all because they were so crooked when I was a kid, I literally had fangs. When I was 14 I had a brace on my top teeth, and after six months they were perfectly straight – and that’s something I’ve never regretted one bit. So I don’t know why I held off whitening for so long…

In fact, I do – the countless horror stories I’d heard made me nervous to put any kind of chemical in my mouth. But then I started to think about how illogical that really was, because I would quite happy put my mouth trough far worse: alcohol, cigarettes (occasionally, may I add, before the smoking police come at me), sugar… all the things we have on a day-to day basis that send us running to the dentist.

So when I was offered the chance to meet Dr. Mervyn Druian from The London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry for a whitening session, I decided it was finally time to do what I’d always wanted to do and finally bring them up a couple of shades.

My teeth whitening treatment

When I first went to see Mervyn a couple of months back, what really took me by surprise was how white my teeth actually were – they were shade B2, which isn’t actually bad. In fact, I remember thinking how I wish I’d known that before, then I wouldn’t have been so self conscious about them. So my advice would be – if you are concerned about the colour of your teeth, ask your dentist to colour match them, because they’re probably not as yellow as you think.

Because of EU legislation, cosmetic whitening procedures can only use a low 6% of hydrogen peroxide – in dental practices as well as at home. For many, that has changed the effectiveness of basic whitening solutions – which were often up to 45%. But one of the reasons I went with Mervyn is because he uses the Nu Radiance Duet whitening system – which achieves the same results due to its revolutionary whitening accelerator.

And the process couldn’t have been easier. First of all, they took tray impressions of my teeth – the sort you have made for braces and retainers – which was followed by a one-hour whitening treatment at the practice, which used a tooth whitening light that warmed the whitening gel on the teeth to give the process and intensive kick-start. After that, it was a case of taking the gel home and continuing the treatment every day for 45 minutes until they ran out – around 20 days later.

What’s really great is how quick and easy the whole thing is. Firstly, the consultation: I arrived at 3:30pm and left at 5:30pm. And the fact that the at-home whitening is such minimum effort makes it great for any kind of lifestyle. I even used it when I walked Toby one day – it’s that discreet. The only thing they advise is avoiding certain foods and drinks that might stain – coffee, curry, red wine, etc. – but for the sake of 3 weeks, it’s manageable.

What’s the difference between going to a practice and buying an at-home kit? Well, if you’ve ever tried an over the counter, home whitening kit – and believe me, I’ve done many, you’ll know that the results don’t live up to what’s on the box. I also think, often, you don’t really know what you’re getting, and when it comes to teeth you want to really spend a little more money and treat them with something that’s kind and effective.

Another key difference, and why I’d always recommend going down the professional route, if you get the trays made – which help ensure theres an even coverage of gel on the teeth. Yes, many of the home whitening kits come with trays, but they’re not tailor made and won’t cover your whole mouth. So it’s better to have them moulded and made properly to ensure the best results.

One hour of laying in these funky glasses with a light in my mouth? Of course I’m gonna take selfies…

When I returned for the final consultation, Mervyn compared my teeth with the chart again and they’d been boosted to A1 – the whitest natural shade for teeth. And now, I’m thrilled with them! Call it vain – and maybe it is – but I just feel so confident in my smile now, that I think whitening is something everyone should do.

Thank you so much to Mervyn and everyone at The London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry for offering me the treatment and being so great. If you are thinking of having your teeth whitened, check out their website – I’d 100% recommend – and drop me a message if you have any questions about my experience. And finally, keep your eyes peeled for the second part of my teeth whitening series, about the best ways to keep your teeth looking fresh and white.
